MAG3 Renal Scan
WHAT IS A MAG3 RENAL SCAN?
A Nuclear Medicine MAG 3 Renal Scan is used to asses how well your kidneys are working and draining.
This test can also be called a MAG 3, MAG111, DTPA, Lasix Renal Scan, F-15 Renal Scan F+ 15 Renal Scan, F=0 Renal scan, Captopril Renal Scan.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A MAG3 RENAL SCAN?
When you arrive you lay on the imaging table. You will be given a small injection in your arm You will not feel any different. The injection looks at how your kidneys are functioning. You will then have 20-40 minutes worth of scan. Sometimes you may be given a second injection of a diuretic called Lasix. This maybe given if you have a possible blockage.
Nb. If your Doctor has requested a Captopril Renal Scan you may have a second set of images. Imaging staff will discuss this with you when you make your appointment.
HOW LONG DOES A MAG3 RENAL SCAN TAKE?
The test can take up to 1 hour. Longer if you are having a Captopril Renal Scan.
PREPARATION REQUIRED FOR A MAG3 RENAL SCAN?
- Please make staff aware if you think you maybe pregnant or if you are breast-feeding prior to making an appointment.
- You can eat and drink as normal on the day of your scan.
- You maybe asked to cease certain medications prior to your test.
- Please bring previous scans which relate to your kidneys.
WHEN WILL MY DOCTOR RECEIVE MY RESULTS?
Your Referring Doctor will receive your results within 48hrs.
